Choices is a point-and-click adventure game developed for charity Safe@Last using funding provided by The Railway Children. The game engages young people in learning about risky behaviour that may lead to running away from home. Players steer a virtual crash-test dummy through potentially risky behaviour and then get to see the consequences play out.
The team spent time with local young people from youth clubs that Safe@Last work with to gain their perspective and ensure authenticity in the finished game. A cheeky sense of humour allowed us to make the bad consequences unfold in an entertaining manner (misadventures are always funnier when they happen to someone else!) but also helps players connect with their in-game persona. An avatar builder also allowed players to personalise their characters, building a further connection between the target audience and its real-world implications – all from the safety of a quirky and comic adventure game.
